At one end of the château scale are A-listers like Versailles and Fontainebleau; somewhere towards the other, a multitude of lesser-known but no less charismatic privately owned properties like the baker’s dozen in this lovely book. It’s packed with naturally lit photos of exquisite staircases, fireplaces, panelling and parquet, with profiles of current owners by a former Elle Décoration editor – and although in France the state of heritage sites is a topic of widespread concern, it must be said that the marks of time on the châteaux featured here are no small part of their appeal.
